November marks the celebration of Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Month, a dedicated time to spotlight the exciting yet often challenging journey faced by young individuals transitioning from out-of-home care to independence. Those going through this transition share their experiences;
“I remember crying on my 17th birthday because I knew that nothing had been organised for my future. I thought, I only have year left. I was so overwhelmed I didn’t even think I would make it to adulthood.” (Female, 21)
“I was like a stubborn kid when it came to my transition. Carers kept getting in my face asking what I’d done about it, and I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t realise how important it was until I was alone.” (Gender fluid, 18).
This year’s T2A month theme was ‘Participation’ emphasising how crucial it is for young voices to be valued, listened to, and encouraged. Across Queensland, service providers put great effort into organising events aiming to involve young individuals actively. These events empower young people to shape their futures confidently. One young person who sought help in planning their transition shared;
“YFS was quite helpful. They helped me come up with a plan for the next 2-3 years. Took me to TAFE and all other appointments, got me driving lessons, and sorted other things out.” (Male, 20).
CREATE in Brisbane and YFS teamed up for a big T2A kickoff across the state! CREATE in Cairns also had its own awesome launch on the same day, starting a super fun month.
Next Step Plus rocked it with their planning of several T2A events! From Sunshine Coast to Moreton Bay, Mt Gravatt to Toowoomba, and even Townsville, Ipswich, Caboolture, and Broadwater Parklands, they covered a lot of ground. Young people not only got helpful resources from local service providers but also had a blast connecting with each other. They enjoyed cool activities like bowling, basketball, dancing, karaoke, and water fun!”
CREATE, on behalf of all services, extends a huge thank you to the participating CSSCs for their continuous support in making these events happen every year.
We can’t wait for T2A month 2024.
