Do you want to get involved in improving the residential care system in QLD? Here is your chance
The Queensland Government has announced a review into the residential care system. In the past few months, there have been concerns about the conditions of young people living in residential care and the increasing number of young children and infants placed there.
A review is a way to hear voices from the community, to tell the QLD government what needs to change, and how the residential care system can improve. Voices of young people who have lived in residential care are really important!
After collecting voices from the community, the review will help develop a Roadmap for Contemporary Residential Care in Queensland, which will be delivered to Minister Crawford.

How can you get involved?
Nobody knows what the residential care system is like better than the young people who are or have been there. You know what problems you have been through, what you wished was different, and what you need. Your experience matters, and it can help make a difference.
It is vital that all children and young people with a care experience have their say in this process.
There are a few different ways you can be involved and have a say:
- Join our online Youth Advisory Group (YAG) with other young people in residential care (details below)
- You can share your views through the Get Involved submission portal – just follow the link and answer the questions!
- You can also send a ‘submission’ (a letter with your ideas and views) to the Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services via email at non-familybasedcareandtertiarysupportmailbox@cyjma.qld.gov.au
You have until 29th September 2023 to contribute through the Get Involved submission portal or a submission .
Share your voice with CREATE at our YAG
At CREATE, we want to ensure that as many young people as possible can have a say in this process. To support this, CREATE in Queensland are hosting a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) online on the Wednesday 13th September 4pm to 6pm for young people with a residential care experience to have their say about their personal experience and make recommendations for future improvements. This will be a friendly and non-judgemental event, with other young people like you who are or have been living in residential care.
