Ideas to help you through being stuck at home

Having a day at home to do nothing can be amazing, but having weeks or months straight of being home can be hard to handle. Luckily there are a lot of free resources out there right now so you can spend your time at home trying new activities, getting back into your hobbies, or learning something entirely new. We’ve compiled a list of some of the free things to do to help you pass the time.

Get new skills

Cooking

Why not take this time to learn how to cook? You can impress people with your new skills after, and you get to eat what you make. It’s a win-win situation. But because it can be hard to find things on supermarket shelves right now, Queer Eye’s Antoni has made a special cooking lessons for quarantine show on his Instagram’s IGTV. They’re quick and easy, so check out episode 10 “Parmaggedon” below.

 

Baking

More of a sweet tooth? Christina Tosi is an awesome baker who has started “Baking Club” on Instagram. Baking Club is Christina’s step-by-step videos where you can learn to bake by following along as she makes recipes. Baking Club 1 shows you how to make easy cut out cookies with only four ingredients.

 

Coding

If you read our clubCREATE magazines you might remember us mentioning how you can learn to code with the Hour of Code and CodinGame a few editions ago. The Hour of Code has a huge number of hour long activities where younger kids and complete beginners can learn to code. You don’t have to know anything about coding to start, and a lot of activities involved familiar characters like Barbie or Harry Potter.

If you want a bit more of a challenge, learn to code as you game with CodinGame. Here you get to see your coding changes the game on your screen in real-time.

 

Learn a language

Ever wanted to learn German? How about Japanese or even Latin? These are just some of the languages you can learn through Duolingo. It’s free, available as an app, and you can put as much or as little time as you want into it.

 

Get creative

Art

Isolation art school is an Instagram account dedicated to teaching people art skills at home. The videos range from quick tips to full art lessons from a range of artists. They even have videos on creating things like claymation characters, which can be made out of salt dough using ingredients in your pantry.

 

Animation

Do you have an idea for a cool animation but just don’t know how to make it happen? You can make a free account with Animaker that lets you make your own animated videos. They even have a step-by-step guide for beginners to make their own animations!

 

Experiment with science

There are so many free science experiments that let you learn something while getting hands on and having fun. This Storm in a Teacup experiments from Scouts UK is perfect for kids 8-10. If you’ve got some trees in your backyard, see if you can craft a floating raft in their Twig Raft experiment.

 

Get active

Workout

There aren’t many bigger brands in the fitness world than Nike, and lucky for those wanting to stay or get fit during this time, Nike have their own free app – Nike Training Club. The app has a bunch of guided video workouts for all levels of fitness and with a lot requiring no equipment.

 

Yoga

Yoga is a great way to relax and increase your flexibility, but if you’ve tried yoga before, it’s a lot easier to start when you have someone to show you how to do it. Without being able to leave the house to go to a yoga class, you can find free online videos for beginners. One of the best free yoga resources is the YouTube channel – Yoga with Adriene. Here you’ll find videos of lots of different yoga routines, from quick 5-minute sessions to entire beginner routines.

 

Dance

For dance that young kids can get involved in, check out the Family Dance Workshop YouTube playlist from Sadler’s Wells Theatre.
