CREATE believes young people are the experts of their own lives and that their voices count the most when it comes to changing the system. Hear Our Voice provides a forum for a panel of Young Consultants to share their experiences and ideas about what young people in care need to feel supported by case workers and the care system as a whole.
At our latest Hear Our Voice session, held in our Sydney office in mid-June, in an intimate session of 20 people working in the sector, heard 5 young people speak about topics such as; the impact of being in care on young people’s social lives, sibling contact, the challenges of leaving care, the stereotypes faced by children in care and what makes a good caseworker.
A huge thank you to amazing NSW Young Consultants Tasha, Alee, Carlatina, Wade and Marusha for inspiring us all with your powerful stories at last week’s event. We had some fantastic feedback from workers about how they want to support, encourage and value the voices of young people in care.
Here is some of the feedback from the session:
“Very inspiring to hear all your stories – thank you. You all have provided me with real, honest insight into the barriers and challenges faced by kids in care. I hope that through my work I will be able to channel your collective strength and resilience to help others.”
“I want to continue to work with young people in care and care leavers to help them achieve their educational dreams. You are all an inspiration! #snapthatstigma”
